Why SMS Messages are limited to 160 Chars ??

in 1985, Friedhelm Hillebrand, the chairman of the nonvoice services committee within the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), laid plans to standardize a technology that would allow cellphones to transmit and display text messages .

For this he formed a committe, which analysed the number of chars to be present, they have assumed two important factors

1) Postcards often contain fewer than 150 characters

2) The committe analyzed a set of messages sent through Telex, a then-prevalent telegraphy network for business professionals. Despite not having a technical limitation, Telex transmissions were usually about the same length as postcards.

So the committee finally decided on the 160 character length for text messages.
